What’s in the Bag?

“What’s in the bag? Something for meeee??”
That’s what we always say in our classic “dog voice” whenever we come home carrying anything. It’s been a household staple since 1998, when our first golden retriever, Acorn, would greet us with an enthusiastic “sniffspection” of every bag and box. 🥰
In the spirit of that tradition, I thought it would be fun to share what’s really in my bag (my camera bag, that is!), and why it matters for your dog's session!
While this post might catch the eye of photography enthusiasts, it’s really all about giving you a peek behind the scenes, and showing how everything I bring along helps create a photo session that’s safe, fun, and tailored to your dog.
Let’s Start with the Bag Itself
About a year ago, I switched from a heavy backpack to a rolling suitcase-style camera bag. This little change helps me keep everything organized and saves my back, which means I show up ready to move, squat, lay on the ground, and do whatever silly things I need to do to capture those perfect moments with your pup! (And when the going gets a little rough, I throw the suitcase into an all-terrain wagon for extra mobility.)

Inside the Bag: The Magic Makers
📸 The Camera
When people say, “Your camera takes really great photos!”, I usually smile and say something to the effect of, “Yes, and I taught it everything it knows!” 😉 But in all seriousness, I use a Canon R5, a really incredible camera, especially amazing at focusing on moving subjects (like busy noses and wagging tails!) thanks to its animal eye tracking technology. This ensures we never miss those sweet, fleeting glances or joyful zoomies.
🔍 The Lenses
Depending on the style of photos we’re aiming for, I pack several different lenses. A few of my faves include:
The 135mm lens creates that dreamy, blurred background that makes your dog pop like a little superstar.
The 16-35mm lens is for when I want to get up close and personal (while still handing out treats!).
The 70-200mm is my go-to for those stunning action shots where your dog can race and romp naturally without feeling "posed."
💡 Lighting
Often, I bring special lights to help brighten up scenes, regardless of the scenario - backlit, shady, cloudy, even in full sun. It’s all about making your dog look their absolute best, no matter what Mother Nature throws at us. (I wrote a blog post about various lighting situations, be sure to check it out here!)
📱 Behind-the-Scenes Fun
I love capturing behind-the-scenes moments for you, too! I bring a phone tripod and a remote so your dog’s family can help document the magic happening.
🎒 Other Essentials
Extra batteries, memory cards, lens wipes (dogs are really good at nose print art & flinging slobber 😆), and even little branded bookmarks to hand out because every great adventure deserves a souvenir!
The Doggie Must-Haves
🦴 Slip Leads
Safety first! I often use simple slip leads during sessions, they’re secure and discreet, making it easier to keep your pup safe and minimize editing afterward.
🍖 Treats and Rewards
I always carry "doggie trail mix" for little rewards throughout the session, plus a stash of backup treats in case we burn through the first batch. Your pup’s happiness and motivation are key to natural, joyful photos.
🧸 Noisemakers and Toys
I bring an assortment of squeakers, duck calls, tiny toys, and balls, all designed to grab your dog’s attention, spark their personality, and get those adorable expressions you love.
💧 Water and Clean-up
A collapsible water bowl (hydration is important!) and extra poop bags, just in case someone needs an emergency pit stop.
The "Mom Kit" - Because Life Happens
You know that little kit moms seem to have for every situation? I have one too! Just in case, I carry:
Bandaids, tissues, and hand sanitizer
Pain relievers, allergy meds, and cough drops
Chapstick, hair ties, floss, and even some butterscotch candies (you just never know, right? 😄)
All these little details mean that no matter what, we’re prepared to keep your session relaxed, fun, and focused on celebrating your amazing dog. 🐶✨

I just had the nose marble on my brand new wide angle lens yesterday. I removed it with a microfiber. Do you have a recommended lens wipe?
