Want Paw-some Photos? Start with These Questions!

As a dog photographer, I love when clients come to me with questions. It shows they’re invested in the experience and want the best for their dog’s session. But over the years, I’ve realized there are a handful of questions I wish people would ask - questions that would make the session smoother, the images even more stunning, and the overall experience more enjoyable for everyone involved. Here are a few of those questions and why they matter.

How Can I Best Prepare My Dog for the Session?

GREAT question, I’m so glad you asked!! 😉 A little preparation prior to your pooch’s session can make a huge difference. Making sure your dog is well-exercised but not exhausted, brushing their coat, and practicing basic commands can lead to a smoother session. If your dog has specific quirks (like being reactive or shy), letting me know in advance helps me tailor the session to their comfort level.

What Happens if My Dog Won’t Sit Still?

I hear this concern a lot after the session, but I wish more people asked it beforehand! The good news? I don’t need a perfectly still dog to capture amazing images. I have plenty of tricks (and a fast shutter speed!) to work with even the wiggliest pups. If you’re worried, I can also suggest posing techniques and locations that naturally encourage calm behavior.

Do You Have Location Recommendations?

Some clients come in with a specific location in mind, but many don’t realize that the setting plays a big role in the final look of their images. I know plenty of stunning, dog-friendly locations that work well with different personalities, whether your dog thrives in open fields, forested trails, or urban backdrops.

Can I Be in the Photos Too?

YES! Even if you think you just want images of your dog, I always encourage clients to step in for a few shots. These don’t have to be posed portraits - sometimes the best images are of you interacting naturally with your pup. Years down the line, you’ll be grateful to have those memories captured.

What Should I Bring to the Session?

Beyond the obvious (your dog and a leash), a few extras can make a big impact. High-value treats, a favorite toy, a brush for quick touch-ups, and a water bowl are all great to have on hand. If your dog wears a harness, I may recommend bringing a simple collar and leash instead, as it photographs more cleanly (AND it’s easier to remove in the post process!).

What If the Weather is Bad?

Weather can be unpredictable, but there’s always a plan! I keep a close eye on the forecast and will reach out if we need to reschedule. Some overcast days actually create beautiful, soft lighting, so don’t worry if the sun isn’t shining. And if we do have to postpone, we’ll find a new date that works for everyone. (Be sure to check out last week’s post where I discuss various types lighting scenarios, including weather.)

How Do I Choose the Best Images?

Picking your favorites can definitely be tough! I provide a carefully curated selection of the best shots and I’m right there with you during the selection process to walk you through everything. If you’re struggling, I help by discussing the merits of each, and how different images might work together in an album or as wall art.

What Can I Do with My Photos?

So many clients get excited about their images but aren’t sure what to do with them beyond sharing online. I love helping people turn their photos into tangible art - whether that’s a statement piece for your home, a folio box with a variety of images, or even a small acrylic block for your desk at work – I’ve got you covered!

Ask Away!

I hope this post encourages future clients to ask these (and any other!) questions before their session. The more we communicate, the better I can create images that truly capture your dog’s personality and your bond with them. So don’t be shy - ask away!
